“Selfie” Leslie Vigeant, watercolor on paper

Artspace has welcomed artist Leslie Vigeant for the month of July

First Friday Gallery Walks: July 4, August 1 & September 5, 6-10 p.m. Gallery Talk: July 24, 6 p.m.

Artspace’s Gallery One will become a working studio for Oregon-based visual artist Leslie Vigeant. She will use this time to solidify a recent shift in her practice from strictly oil paint to large-scale watercolors. With a background in branding and product packaging, her work includes tongue-in-cheek humor, seduction, and accessible meanings and imagery.

We say, “Right on! We will be there.”

Vigeant will teach Watercolor for teens this summer and Patterning, Painting, and Digital Media for adults during her residency.

Working with watercolors, Vigeant’s focus lies in creating images that reflect the human ego and figurative energy. Through her chosen subject matter and selected medium, she composes works that appear more graphically designed than expected, while still highlighting the organic quality of watercolor. With many pieces exceeding five feet, this new body of work reflects Vigeant’s endeavor to “grow and be bold with scale.” Referring to her paper canvases as vast landscapes, she uses small sections of each piece to apply her investigatory and explorative methods to the overall composition.

Vigeant’s work particularly addresses concepts of interior thought processes, including self-deprecation and obsession. She translates the complexities of the human ego into a female figure (often her own), using patterning and repetition to, in her words, “push the work to the edge of its perception.” Paired with the organic nature of the watercolor medium, Vigeant’s technique and subject matter create a family of work that investigates humanity, femininity in particular. Her goal is to find a female figure, native to Raleigh, around whom she may cater her work while at Artspace.

DON’T MISS THIS ARTIST.

Leslie Vigeant received her M.F.A. in applied craft & design from Oregon College of Art and Craft/Pacific Northwest College of Art.
