Kristin Newman: What I Was Doing While You Were Breeding

What I Was Doing While You Were Breeding memoir modern memoirs women writers interviews rhiannon glory tree herald reagan k reynolds Newman always loved traveling. Her schedule as a television comedy writer, allowed her to travel several months out of the year in mixed groups or just with her girlfriends. After many fun trips as singles, her travel partners began pairing off to marry and start families. Not ready to give up her love of travel she sets off on her own world-wide solo trips. Stripping herself bare on the page with hilarious truth, Newman shares her salacious travel stories. The title of these memoirs alerts readers that this is not going to be your typical compilation of adventures and with chapters like: “If I Don’t Sleep with this Russian Bartender, the Terrorists Win,” “Thirty-Five is Too Old to be Sleeping in a Bathroom” and “Love Like You’re About to Get Deported,” a reader knows they are in for some crazy (and sometimes raunchy) tales. Newman provides logical advice such as “don’t overplan, and don’t book expensive trips if you want to meet fun, single people” or to take “an 8 p.m. pre-dinner nap” when in Buenos Aires. But mostly her stories are so hilarious that you will find yourself shaking your head and chuckling. I personally found myself laughing out loud due to a particular story that includes a punch line of  “because the horse tranquilizers were organic.” Newman doesn’t hold back any strange and awkward situations and her witty story-telling style has me choosing this compilation as the funniest book I have read this year.

Like any good memoir, after all the laughter comes the heart-of-the-matter and as the stories draw to a close, Newman analyzes herself and begins to understand why she may in fact be running away and not merely going on adventures.

This debut by author Kristin Newman is a combination of Elizabeth Gilbert’s travel memoirs and Chelsea Handler’s sexual exploits. Whether you are a young solo traveler or you wish to live vicariously through a young woman’s world travels, you will enjoy “What I Was Doing While You Were Breeding.”
